January 2014 – Monthly Summary

With it being the start of a new year and the first month my new site design has been up and running I’ve decided to introduce monthly summary reports. I know many other bloggers write monthly summaries and they can be a great way of quickly updating visitors to the site on whats been happening over the last month.

Goings on in my Life

This month has really been about getting back into the swing of things after the hectic Chrsitmas holiday. With my Masters degree now complete, I am working a full 5 day week at my full time job, the good news is that I no longer have a pile of coursework and revision to worry about, which means I can spend more time of an evening concentrating on this site.

In regards to travelling I am still trying to save up as much possible (more info on my savings further down) however with the wing mirror of my car being knocked off and also my girlfriend hitting a pothole and blowing out a tyre, the savings pot was around £250 less than it could have been.

Website News

With the start of the new year I introduced my brand new site design. It’s fully responsive and I’ve been working hard to make it look good and run as fast as possible. I’m still playing around with it so you may see some slight changes occuring here and there when I find new plugins or scripts to try out. If you would like an idea of some of the plugins I am running on this site then I recommend you check out my Best Free WordPress Plugins for Travel Bloggers post.

For the third month in a row Abroad Travel Magazine have published one of my articles. You can find out which one and also read my other two articles from the previous months on my Press page.

Below you can catch up on all the posts published during January 2014

Social Followers

Here is where I plan on keeping track on the number of social followers across all of my accounts month on month. If you haven’t done so already I would be very grateful if you followed me on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Youtube, Pinterest or StumbleUpon. Hey, why not follow me on all of them.

I have only just started my Pinterest account, so I am excited to see how that develops. I’m also not really sure if anyone really uses StumbleUpon so much anymore, but if you do please follow me and I will be happy to follow you back.

Website Income – $350 or £213

This is the part I’m guessing most people are generally interested in, the income made by this site. In January 2014 I made $350 from direct advertising. Not bad considering I haven’t made a direct effort to contact advertisers and it’s a foundation that I hope to build on every month. If you would like to advertise on my site then please read this page first.

So is making money travel blogging on the internet possible, definately, but please be aware that this is certainly a labour of love. With the hours I put into this site I am earning well below the minimum wage.

Travel Savings

Now the most exciting part for me is my travel savings pot. Seeing this grow every month and dreaming of the possible destinations it could take me to is getting me through the cold January days here in the UK. I currently have a little over £10k in savings.

This is my savings in total. A lot of this is held up within different accounts such as premium bonds and a FTSE tracker so what I actually have could be a little more or less, depending on the market.

There you have my first ever monthly summary. I hope you found it informative and interesting. If you have any questions or any recommendations as to what else I could add to the monthly summary then let me know in the comments below.
