Go 4-Wheeling on Hawaii’s Coastline

Making the leap from Hawaiian vacation to Hawaiian adventure takes a bit of forethought and imagination. A typical vacation tour might be you riding around in a silly tour bus, but the most beautiful and exciting parts of the islands are off the beaten path.

If you’re looking to experience a fresh take on tropical paradise, consider the adventures you could forego on an all-terrain vehicle! Excitement — and waterfalls — are just around the bend!

ATV Outfitters

ATV Outfitters calls itself “Hawaii’s Original All-Terrain Vehicle Adventure.” Their tours go into the heart of Kohala and bring you to the oldest volcano at the center of the planet. Guides are run by Bill and Sandy Wong, a couple with deep ties to the island that go back many generations, so they can take visitors not only through the trails, but through the history of the attractions, as well. ATV Outfitters features the following tours:

Historic Ocean Trail

This tour, along the Kohala Ditch, takes a ride along the top of 200 foot sea cliffs and over the course of an hour and a half. Along the way, refreshments are available at a hidden bay, overlooking prime surf spots.

While the beauty of the trail doesn’t hold back, the trail itself is designed to be user-friendly, even for the inexperienced rider.

$129 per rider, $80 per passenger

15 mile Waterfall Adventure

This two-hour tour takes riders through the Hawaiian rainforest and stops for refreshments at a private waterfall. Through the course of the ride, you’ll climb from 250 feet above the ocean to 2,500 feet high. This ride is a bit more exhausting so you may want to brush the dirt off your BikeBandit ATV tires at home and freshen up your skills before the big ride.

$179 per rider, $130 per passenger

22 Mile Deluxe Adventure

The Deluxe Adventure is a three-hour ride that hits both the coastline of Kohala as well the rainforest and gorgeous waterfalls. From 2,500 feet, you’ll experience spectacular views and hear genuine historical tales from native Hawaiian guides. You’ll also get to stop and take a short hike to a gorgeous tropical waterfall where you’ll enjoy refreshments and have a chance to snap photos to show the crew back home.

$249 per rider, $130 per passenger

Waipio Valley — Ride the Rim

The Ride the Rim Tour in Waipio Valley is another wonderful ATV adventure. This tour lasts three hours and is focused not only on exposing you to the beauty and mystical history of the Waipio Valley.

Before taking off, you’ll receive guidance on how to operate the ATV safely. If you or the guides decide that riding is too much, refunds are available, and there’s the option sometimes still to experience the trail in a buggy.

You can arrange to take the buggy from the beginning, which is a great option for kids under 16, the elderly, or anyone who prefers not to ride.

ATV Adventure at Kualoa Ranch

You may not recognize the name, but this area provided the backdrop for films like “Jurassic Park” and “Peal Harbor.” The ATV tours last an hour or two and are one of the most affordable adventures in Hawaii starting at $72.25.
